Zacharias is one of my preschoolers at Escuela Marangatu. He sings to himself as he colors, gives fierce bear hugs while shouting "TEACHER!" in a voice too husky for a 5-year-old, and refuses to speak English in class, even though he spent the first few years of his life in the States before moving back to Paraguay with his mother (since none of his friends speak English, he avoids being the odd one out by feigning ignorance or responding in Spanish whenever I speak to him). And he happens to have the most beautiful, gravity-defying, impossibly long eyelashes I've ever seen. Sigh.
